Great for detective fans
One day, Helen Stoner comes to Sherlock Holmes and tells him a bad story about her sister and her stepfather. Her sister Julia died two years ago, just before she wanted to marry. Now, Helen wants to marry, too. But in the last nights, she heard strange sounds. Will she die like her sister? Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson help her to find the reason, why her sister died. The story is very exciting and great for all detective fans. “The Speckled Band” is easy to read, but there are some new words, so I would read it in grade 6 or 7. If you are good at English, you can start reading it when you are 12 years old. The book is exciting and a littlel bit scary. However, I like the book because of that.

New case for Sherlock Holmes
I like the book “The Speckled Band” because it is easy to read. It’s an interesting story and it is very exciting. The point of view is nice because Dr Watson tells us the story of Holmes’ new case. I would recommend the book for children between 10 and 13 years because sometimes it is a little bit violent. The story takes place in the 19th century, but that’s no problem. You can guess most of the new words from the context or the little pictures.

My first book in English
I like the book because it was easy to understand and the story was very exciting. Some scenes were sad and some were really dramatic. It was easy to learn the new vocabulary because the new words were written in italics and described below the text. I would recommend the book for 11 or 12 year old girls and boys because it is funny to follow the most famous detective Sherlock Holmes how he solves the case.

It was morning in early April, in the year '83.
...That's the beginning of a great story we read in class. I recommend the book to 11-13 years old kids because in this age you can understand the book best. If you are older it is not so interesting and it is too easy to read. Besides I think the book “The Speckled Band” has got a good style. There are vocabulary explanations on each page. The author gives you information about the story step by step. So you want to go on reading the story. It’s a very good book.
